JOB DESCRIPTION:          Guidance Counselor

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Master’s degree or higher with major in guidance and counseling.
  2. Certification in guidance and counseling by Kentucky Department of Education.
  3. At least one (1) year of successful teaching experience (elementary school level desired).

 

REPORTS TO:         Principal

 

JOB GOALS:            To work with students to overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in making educational, occupational, and life plans that hold promise for their personal fulfillment as mature and responsible adults; and to support the Mission Statement of the Estill County School System.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Conducts an assessment of the school guidance program and communicates the purposes of the guidance program to the students, parents, staff and community.
  2. Provides individual and group guidance services pertaining to academic, personal and social development.
  3. Assists with the maintenance of the permanent record system and helps provide information for the placement and scheduling of students in classes appropriate to their needs. Interprets permanent record data to parents or legal guardians upon request.
  4. Participates in the planning, organization, and implementation of the school district’s consolidated plan and testing program. Provides and interprets test results to students, parents, and staff.
  5. Participates in the process concerning the placement and referral of students with special education needs. Assists, through the School Based Admission and Release Committee process, in the placement of students identified with special education needs.
  6. Consults with parents on school-student related concerns (attendance, grades, behavior, etc.).
  7. Acts as liaison to community agencies to provide necessary services for students.
  8. Functions as the individual in charge in the principal’s absence, within the framework established by the principal if the school has no assistant principal.
  9. Trained in the KCCRB Critical Incident Stress Management Model.
  10. Maintains confidentiality of students and/or staff.
  11. Performs other duties assigned by the principal.

 

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:        Days and salary pursuant to district salary schedules.
