JOB DESCRIPTION:          Bus Assistant

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High School diploma or equivalent.
  2. Experience working with young children.
  3. Understand and relate to children with special needs.

 

REPORTS TO:         Transportation Director

 

JOB GOALS:            To assist school bus driver in maintaining discipline while bus is in operation assuring safety of students; maintain proper records and documentation; assist student loading, unloading and seating arrangements as required; and to support the Mission Statement of the Estill County School System.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Attend work daily, be in prompt attendance and remain on duty as specified by the Superintendent or the Superintendent’s designee.
  2. Assists the bus driver in maintaining discipline on school bus; monitors and assists students while bus is in operation.
  3. Consults with and assists bus driver in documentation of student information; record keeping and completing route surveys.
  4. Assists driver in assuring seat belts, harnesses and wheel chair clamps are secured as required.
  5. Assists parents and school personnel with safe loading and unloading of students; coordinates seating of pre-kindergarten students as required by State Transportation Guidelines.
  6. Communicates with classroom aides, teachers, principals, and parents concerning student background, medical problems and behavior as appropriate.
  7. Maintains current knowledge of Emergency Evacuation procedures.
  8. Assists special needs children on and off the bus and escort children across street/road upon return home; lifts children as required; assures responsible adult meets students leaving the bus.
  9. Performs post-trip check of the bus at end of route along with the driver.
  10. Operates equipment, including wheelchairs, tie-downs, seat belts, harnesses, mechanical lift and other adaptive equipment as necessary.
  11. Attends in-service meetings and training courses as assigned.
  12. Maintains confidentiality of students and/or staff.
  13. Performs related duties as assigned.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:        Days and salary pursuant to district salary schedules.
